MORTAL KOMBAT!
Shortpacked!: MORTAL KOMBAT!

It's true! A "Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe video game is coming. And it's rated T! For Teens! Woof.

That's right, it's still time for whoring out Shortpacked! Book 2! Way back long ago, I did a strip that made fun of Greg Land. Well, for maybe the first time I think, you can see the original assemblage of photographs that I traced to create this masterpiece, provided whole-hog in the appendix of this grand tome. See a small preview to the left.

The vanilla $14.95 version is available, but why shoot so low, when there's the $24.95 "Shortpacked! Extra" version? SP! Extra, limited to 200, is numbered, signed, and doodled in. They're over half gone, and won't last.

The quicker these are preordered, the quicker the book comes out!

Before I escape to BotCon this weekend, allow me to shower my manlove all over this G.I. Joe toy. A new Battle Armor Cobra Commander! Now this is an anniversary toy. At some point Cobra Commander got an armored (and air-conditioned!) suit, because, really. He was just wearing slacks and a jacket, before. Gearing up for battle involved covering his head. A little more manly, really, 'cuz that requires some balls, but why be manly when you can dress up like an Imperial Stormtrooper?

As far as I can tell, he only has one reused part, that being Beachhead's noggin. His helmet fits really snugly over it. Due to his helmet being a real accessory, his head actually looks like a real human size! Too often they scale down the heads of the helmeted folks to freakish mutant proportions, as if the helmet were their head. That is not a problem here. He's also got a newly-molded backpack based on the original, and he comes with a laser pistol.

I had the original dude when I was a kid. Not in 1982, but 1987! You have no idea how happy this toy makes me.

Do a Podobo and we're totally in business.
Shortpacked!@TNI: Porn!
Shortpacked!: Just kidding about the porn.

I have my awesome Premium Ironhide now, so I'm selling off my custom-painted old Ironhide! It comes with art I drew!

The first batch of Animated toys have started popping up two months early in Cincinnati K-marts. (Test marketing? Sometimes Cincinnati gets that.) It is taking every ounce of willpower I have not to drive down there right now. It's only 90 miles!

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR SO LONG

While searching in vain for that TRU G.I. Joe exclusive three-pack that includes Grunt, I found PopCo Entertainment's Super Mario "action figure" line. A few months ago I volunteered how huge of a Mario Dork I am. These small PVCs were irresistible. I had to have them. I mean, c'mon, a Paragoomba? That's too sweet to pass up.

The display cartons were pretty picked through when I got there, so I had to make some different choices than I would have otherwise. There's two price points, with a single PVC figurine (or a Paragoomba and Bob-Omb together) carded for $4, or you can get a set of two with a tin for $10. Because the Toys "R" Us I was at was lacking carded little dudes, I ended up getting the Luigi/Paragoomba and Mario/Bob-Omb tin sets, plus a single carded Bullet Bill. I'll decide if I want a Yoshi later. I'm not terribly keen on him. Maybe if Mario could ride him.

And check out Wave 2! Daisy? Lakitu? Shy Guy? I am going to be buying SO many Koopa Troopa/Shy Guy packs.

This toyline is awesome. The sculpts are top-notch, the paint is precise, and they're not shying (so to speak) away from the generics. It's too bad Bowser Junior has superceded the original Koopa Kids. Having a set of those dudes would make me shit my pants.

I got two emails about yesterday's strip. Two. You people are horrible.

A new challenger!
Shortpacked!@TNI: thheee eeeenndiiiing
Shortpacked!: Increasing dementia-icus.

It is true. Super Smash Bros. Brawl is upon us. And even though Columbus was hit with 20 inches of snow, I dug Maggie's car out of its wintery tomb (with incredible help from Graham) so that we could hit the treacherous streets at the stroke of midnight, descend upon a Wal-mart, and return home with delicious new Smash Bros. goodness.

Smash Bros. is serious business.

Yesterday was a beautiful day. Around dinnertime, Graham and I went out on foot looking for food. Sure, most places would be closed, but the adventure was finding a place that was not. Every other intersection, we would come across a car in trouble, so even if we didn't eventually discover an open Johnny Rocket's, the trip would have been worth it measured only in philanthropy. There was one unpleasant screaming cursing man who was kind of a pain, but I choose to forget him.

I regret only that I didn't bring my camera with me. It was a stupid mistake. There is so much I wish I had a record of, like the snow covering the logs crossing the steam in front of the apartment complex. And the logo for the graphic design studio that looks like a schlong. I guess I can go back for the second one later.

The day was chaos, and we tamed it.

We were men.

Hey, pizanos!
Shortpacked!: As voiced by Captain Lou Albano

Here's another one of Graham's toys. Movie Evac hurts a little for me to skip. Look at him. He's orange. You know me and orange. It's amazing to see what used to be Blackout, who was entirely gray and black, come alive in orange, white, and electric blue. Additionally, Evac has lots of retooling. The silvery soft plastic parts that used to make up Scorponok and Blackout's head and hands was swapped out for new tooling, giving Evac a new noggin, new hands, and a life raft that transforms into a handgun.

And he's orange.

Other than the lack of a sentient helper (I assume the weapon isn't its own little guy, unlike Scorponok), I think all of the changes to this mold made for a better toy. He's more attractive, for one, with the Coast Guard colors, and the idea of a life raft transforming into a weapon is fun. (Perhaps it is a DEATH RAFT. Eh? Eh? Fine.) The less claw-like fists and the friendlier face and colors brings out a completely different personality to what is mostly the same details. If you have the space to spare, I'd say give him a whirl.

I am wary of doing Shortpacked!s about video games. That's a turf covered by roughly 99% of other webcomics. What am I going to have left to offer that hasn't been scavenged already by my peers? But sometimes I forget and I do it anyway.

Mario's dear to my heart. I've been doodling him in my notebooks since elementary school. In fifth grade, my best friend and I used the bulletin board surface of our huge shared cabinet space to lay out the most awesome Super Mario Bros level plan you can imagine. It had Wart and Bowser. It had plains, it had dungeons, it had ice. It was a feat of awesome. I remember seeing the first screenshots of Super Mario 3 in Video Games magazine and adding new characters to our bulletin board accordingly. I remember redrawing and recoloring Mario with blue overalls and a red shirt when he began appearing that way consistently instead of appearing occasionally in the reverse. I was a Mario dork.

Which is why it's a real shame that it's taken me this long to put the little plumber in a comic. Drawing him is hardwired into me, I'm pretty sure. Drawing today's comic was like seeing an old friend. ...An old friend I've been cursing at for the past 120 Power Stars or so, but you know how it is. (I'm currently working on the second 120.)
