The Adorable Iron Man Shortpacked!: Nuh-na nuh-na nuh-naaaa...
Look out, it's The Invincible Adorable Iron Man! Oh, I amuse myself too easily.
Hey, remember that mysterious Universe Swerve? I don't recall if I ever mentioned him on this blog, as I try to shy away from news on here until it's officially available, but a while ago, a red Transformer who transformed into a Chevy Aveo showed up in the murky corners of the Internet. What distinguished this toy is that Hasbro apparently had no plans to sell this thing at all, ever. It was a brand new mold, made to order for Chevy, for no reason anybody could discern. Completely unprecedented.
Well, months later, you can now buy him on the European Chevy Store website. For Americans, the cost of owning this curiosity is high. The toy itself, before shipping, is $20-30. ...and then there's an international processing fee of about $50 on top of that. Yikes!
Nobody's guaranteed the right to buy everything for cheap, so's if I wanted this, I had to cough up the dough. Graham and I got together and decided to do a double-order on this thing and split the fee between us. So depending on how fast this shipment takes, I'll totally have Crazy Transformers Curiosity Which Boggled All Of Us For Months within a hopefully short period of time.
And, sure, Graham will have one too, but fuck that guy.

Tony Stark makes me feel Shortpacked!: Can't get no satisfaction.
He's a cool exec with a heart of steel!
As Steve-o had attested, Iron Man toys were occupying an endcap now at the local Target. I found one Mark 01 version left, with mostly normal-ish Iron Men and Target's exclusive version filling the pegs. Sweetness!
Iron Man Mark 01 is basically the real-life version of the original Iron Man suit, which was a lumbering iron-colored affair. He looks slow, ploddering, and monstrous, especially compared to the sleek and sexy number he wears today. That appeals to me.
True to its origins, the Mark 01 suit looks like it was soldered together using whatever metal parts were available. It's almost steampunk, but not quite. He's asymmetrical. And the little conveyor belts in his thighs are pretty awesome. This Iron Man can kick your ass, even though it looks not incredibly agile.
His poseability matches his looks. The photo shows the extent of his elbow and knee motion. This may be a detriment to some, but it makes sense to me. Why would I want to put this design in a dynamic pose anyway? He's supposed to lumber around at a turtle's pace belching fire. He's a tank.

Thinks he's so smart. Shortpacked!@TNI: The Headtacular Spider-man Shortpacked!: The World's Greatest Detective
Spectacular Spider-man is an engaging television show with an outstanding sense of visual design. Hasbro has brought that visual design to, uh, the heads of the Spectacular Spider-Man action figure toyline.
Just the heads.
Man, I wish I'd paid more attention to this guy before I bought him in the store. Sure, he's got a nice pair of headsculpts, Peter or Spidey, that match his animated appearance, but the rest? Clearly not adhering to the model sheets all that closely. The toy's webbed up like the traditional comic book Spider-man costume, while the animated program narrows the detailing down to a minimalist beauty.
As a fan of the art of Sean "Cheeks" Galloway, the visual designer behind the series, I'm really disappointed, and hope that future waves of the toyline adhere much more closely.

In a brothel just down the street and around the corner... Shortpacked!@TNI: You know who you are. Shortpacked!: 2 Samuel 13
Big thanks to ASM for their as-always superb Toy Fair coverage!
Transformers Universe, Hasbro's all-encompassing "everything that's not Animated" line, was represented at Toy Fair with the Deluxe class ($10) and Ultra class ($20) figures we'd gotten a sneak peek at, plus a handful of surprises. A Deluxe Galvatron was the stand-out newcomer, and true to his appearance on the original cartoon, he transforms from his gray altmode into a purple robot. I'm not especially enamored with him, since I'm perfectly fine with my Energon Galvatron representing the character, and this version's robot mode looks a little kibbly and his legs a little awkward. There were also new Robot Heroes, including awesome new figurines of Waspinator and Rhinox. Kickass! It's interesting to see some toy influences on them, since Rhinox's character model differed drastically from the samurai motif of his action figure. And there some more Legends class redecoes. Somewhat boring character selection, especially since two of them have bigger toys. I'd rather see other characters.
On the Animated side of things, Leader class Bulkhead with Headmaster accessory looks awesome. All of the Leader class figures (including Earth mode Megatron) have recorded speech from their cartoon's real voice actor that plays when you press a button. When you attach Headmaster over their noggin, the voice changes to their captor's, who rants about his "total ownage" of them. That's pretty awesome. We also got one of our first looks at Deluxe class Ratchet, which is a toy I've been anticipating greatly. I love the mid-hood articulation to get his robot mode "old man gut" right. Confirmation of another toy's awesomeness arrived with the presence of Soundwave, who jams on his guitar. The guitar, of course, because the universe is a pleasant one, transforms into Laserbeak. He really does look to be one of the coolest Transformers ever conceived.
For G.I. Joe's continuing 25th anniversary celebration, several multipacks of G.I. Joe cartoon-specific toys are coming out, including the cartoon-accurate Lady Jaye seen to the left. I personally dig toy Lady Jaye's hat and dark green jumpsuit, but the hatless cartoon version is pretty cute, too. More vehicles are slotted to come out as well, including Serpentor's chariot. Sweet! I had that when I was a kid, and I'm excited to get a new one. I'm also glad to see the return of Clutch and the VAMP. By collecting the multipacks, apparently you can assemble the cartoon's MASS Device. Intriguing! It's so weird to see cartoon-based stuff in Joe, since the comic seems to be the overwhelming thing to remember.
And finally for today, here's links to Hasbro's Marvel Transformers, part of the new Transformers Crossovers line that also includes Star Wars Transformers. To the right is Iron Man, who's a cool exec who transforms into a jet of steel. There's also a Hulk tank (of course!) planned. All these kinda put the old Toybiz Megamorphs to shame, since they look kinda acceptable and non-crappy. For Marvel Legends, there's a Ultimate Nick Fury/ WWII Captain America set that looks pretty striking. WWII Captain America has always looked awesome.

One More Opinion Nothing much to report today, other than that I was interviewed by Luis Pagan at Silver Bullet Comics again, along with several of my esteemed webcomics peers, about our opinions on One More Day. Enjoy the nerd rage of myself and others!
Actually, wait, one more thing. NECA is doing The Princess Bride action figures! Shit yeah!
