The young old guy.
Shortpacked!: Quick!  Watch sports and drink beer!

Animated Arcee shipped with Cybertron Mode Ratchet.  Now, Ratchet toys aren't exactly scarce, so he arrives with much smaller fanfare from most.  But you know me and my Ratchets.

This toy represents Ratchet when he was younger, in his pre-Earth body.  His forehead crest is still intact and he hasn't quite grown his gut yet.  There's no lines under his eyes or dents in his jaw.

People are much less excited about this mold as Ratchet as they are for what this mold was intended to be later down the line.  With a new head and a new paintjob, he's a good Animated Ironhide, who never got an Earth mode on the show.  At last year's BotCon, they showed us a graycopy prototype of the Ironhide version of this tooling, and they maintained that he'll still come out, somehow.  I hope he does!  It'd kinda suck if he didn't.

This Ratchet still has the "wound" where his EMP weapon should store.  Chronologically, he wouldn't have lost it to Lockdown yet, so to "complete" this toy you need to borrow Lockdown's accessory.  Unfortunately, same as the Earth Mode Ratchet toy, the EMP weapon doesn't really stay put on his arm.  I may have to dremel into the hole later to fix this.

That's admittedly a downside to the mold.  Another is that the vehicle mode is kind of unsatisfying to me.  It's very accurate to what it looked like on the show, and it technically doesn't do anything more than the Earth vehicle does, but my feelings exist anyway.  I think part of the reason is that it doesn't look very nice from the side.  You can plainly see Ratchet's crotch and thighs doing their required contortions.

He comes with a pair of accessories, and unlike the Earth Mode toy, he can actually store them all in both modes.  Earth Ratchet came with a large assortment of tools.  You could shove them down his back in robot mode, but had to put them aside for vehicle mode.  They wouldn't fit inside, nor could they attach to his outside.  Meanwhile, Cybertron Ratchet only comes with two defibrillator pads. You can either lock them into place over his fists or hang them off the back of his vehicle/robot.    He also has an action feature built into his right forearm.  If you push a tab on his elbow, his fist is geared to push forward.  "Clear!"  Or "Punch!" maybe, who knows.

(My Earth Mode Ratchet is, if you remember, heavily modified.  I painted extra detail, added Reprolabels, and he's sporting accessories from a Unicron.com Animated accessory pack.  I figger this is an important disclaimer.)

where did you paint your ratchet?
Mine just has reprolabels.
Still haven't gotten the unicron parts either.

oh god the backtracking I had to do.
Walky, can you do me a favor and make character specific tags from now on instead on line specific?

I'm overall pretty cool with having cybertron ratchet. I was close to skipping it, but then I remembered I like the character and this is sort of a rare version of him, so I picked him up with arcee. (instead of say, getting 2 arcees so I could experiment with one.)

His robot mode is definitely the main attraction. I mean, he's smiling! I totally went, "D'aww, it's a young and happy Ratchet!" And it is kinda unique putting him next to earth mode ratchet, what with the before and after affect. You can just tell it's the same guy years later and his body has gone to seed now. Fit, husky boisterous bruiser to bear belly and late night Letterman, or something.

His vehicle mode is a disappoint. I guess I don't like the elevated treads thing. He doesn't roll, and his right leg doesn't stay in place properly, making his vehicle mode kinda finicky. And that's a no no.

Most young 'bots experiment with their first Arcee, nothing to be ashamed of....

Don't confuse me! Slipstream is also a cool G.I.Joe figure.

I know, I know, there's only so many cool code-names to go around.

But Slipstream got this cool cameo panel in a recent Joe comic where he was just punching the hell out of an enemy soldier.

Odd - mine rolls fine, with little wheels under each tread.

Oh, and Willis? After converting to robot mode you can/should slide his hood back a ways again, for a leaner look.

Ratch

I'm holding out for the Ironhide, myself. Earth mode Ratchet is good enough for me.

I am tickled by his ATV tread-legs. That's something I incorporated into the Cybertron-mode design for a Transformers OC of mine, before Animated Ratchet came along.

And I hate arm-punching gimmicks. They always inhibit the posability of a figure.

His arm poseability isn't hindered whatsoever. His wrist even rotates, same as the other.

Come to think of it, neither this guy nor this guy seem to have lost articulation to their punching gimmicks, either.

I <3 my Cybertron-mode Ratchet, but I wish they'd kept his black-X chest instead of the windshield thing. What use would a sapient robot have for a windshield? Who would look out of it?

The model sheet for his altmode gives him that "windshield thing," though.

So if they're gonna strive for accuracy...

Yeah, but in the cartoon it's black and opaque. Could be a solar panel, or something else. (I also think he should have come with a fake leg for Arcee, though, so...)

Everyone's windows are black and opaque on the show, whether they be Earth or Cybertron vehicles.

Ratchet's earthmode windows are blue, and OP's cybertron mode window is blue. And except for OP's earthmode windshield (which I don't care about because he's not my favorite character ;p) the toys stayed pretty true to windshield colors, that I can recall.

I guess I just REALLY liked the black/red/white design in the cartoon. I'll probably end up taking a paintbrush to it, and also touch up his shoulder panels to make them all glossy black while I'm at it.

Strictly speaking, you can clip Earth-Ratchet's gear to his vehicle mode if you flip out his robot toes and stick the clip ends in. It's not exactly elegant, but it does keep 'em with him.

What strikes me about the altmode is that by laying the tread-leg components down flat and pointing backwards, it could look like the front half of a Rodimus Prime Space Winnebago. There's the jutting hood, the wraparound windshield, and the angled chunk on top of the cab.

Thank you for making me think about the contorted crotch of my favorite Transformer. (I read the heck out of those early issues where he's basically the last Autobot left and has to save the day).
