Bittersweet toy searching

Yeah, so we found wave 4 TFCybertron deluxes today. They're showing up in Wal-marts everywhere, usually as part of a giant display pallet, so they should be pretty easy to find. Ours were found hung up on the pegs like usual, so maybe there wasn't room for the pallet itself.

Anyway, it was a bittersweet toy search because while we did find them, the whole wave is really frustrating. I don't like them. Brimstone is easily the best, but that's just because there's nothing outstandingly wrong with him. He's simple and playable, but on the Way Too Simple side.

On the other end of the spectrum is Crosswise, who's axe-murderingly complex and unplayable. Remember the RiD car brothers? Well, he's definitely one of them. That means he's got thin, fragile car pieces hanging off every bit of his body and he's floppy as all hell. Mine does the splits constantly like he's a performing circus clown or something. And getting him back into car mode involves all the fun of rearranging his altmode shell-pieces back together Rubik's Cube-style that Big Convoy offers. Too bad. I was looking forward to him.

And do I really have to say why I dislike Thunderblast? Dude, she doesn't even transform. You wad her up into a ball and close the boat hull around her. Her feet barely reach the ground, that backpack is so big. There's absolutely nothing I can do with her.

So, um, yeah. Hello whiplash, what with Cybertron having been so pleasant until this wave. Oh well. The sad thing is that since we've reached Christmas, we probably won't get any new waves until March...

It was bound to happen eventually. Every Transformers line has its "not-so-hot" phase. Shame about Crosswise though. I was planning to pick him up, but after your review I think I'll stockpile my money some more and wait out Soundwave and Ramble/Rumble/Scrapmetal/Whatever the kids are calling it this week.

I got mine in July and the two I got kinda grow on me. I still don't much care for Terrashaver/Brimstone because he seems like the odd duck out. Like, if this were a US exclusive mold, we'd be seeing people cry bloody murder over how Hasbro sucks.

Crosswise/Autovolt has grown on me, but after Energon and Armada's largely marvelous offerings, this is a confusing one. I still prefer my Energon toys. You hit the nail on the head, though.

Thunderblast, I still need to find. Although I have a feeling this will inspire me to pull out more Energon toys to futz with. I THINK we can expect Hot Short and Downshift by February but, unfortunately, I dunno for sure. I bet Swerve and Swindle are coming too... exciting.

If you like Alternators, you'll like Crosswise. Both are infuriatingly complex.

"Hello whiplash"

Whiplash would be a good Transformers name.

It was Raksha's character on TF: The Lost Years MUSH. A medusasaur altmode. So I was thrown for a moment at the "hello whiplash" line, thinking it was addressed to her. :)

I still want 'em.

You're knocking on a fembot? I'm going to get her regardless, because I don't have a real woman to own.

I think that might be an inherent problem in making a TF look feminene - there simply aren't that many big hulking vehicle modes you can make look feminine.

I mean, the only real feminine TFs in both modes were TM2 and BM Blackarachnia.

On the other side of the equation, you've got BW Airazor, BM Stryka, and Cybetron Override, who are basically all dudes.

Pretty much the only female TFs that have really worked were Energon Arcee and TM Airazor...both of whom suffered from Huge Backpack Syndrome like Thunderblast here.

And in Airrazor and Override's case (in Japan at least) they really are dudes!

You either have to apply large amounts of kibble or forget putting the necessary curves on them.

Man, now I want to see a move towards full-on butch bardyke-culture TFs. All packin' and stuff. I want a blue one named Stonebutch.

oooh

I wonder if our W-M got it in yet?

Is it like that pallet when the Energon Combiners came out? (I have the banners from that one :D Too bad I don't work there now or I'd try to loot whatever I can from this pallet too -__- )

If you dislike them, why do you purchase them?

Is there an annoying toy/still gotta complete the collection equation I am missing here?

[info]seiberwing

December 11 2005, 16:17:07 UTC 6 years ago

Essentially, yes. Energon Mirage is a bitch to transform and he's been left in robot mode ever since I got him, but I still bought him because he's Mirage and he was cool on the show. And pretty. And so my Snowcat and Demolisher toys wouldn't be lonely.

Well, I didn't think I'd dislike two of them. (Also, I try to get all the characters. They're on the show and I'd miss them. :) )

Here's the Big Question: Can the boat kibble be completely removed from Thunderclash, making her a vehicle-shell Pretender?

Anonymous

December 12 2005, 14:30:50 UTC 6 years ago

Sure, with a knife.

In defense of Thunderblast, her gun is really, really neat.

Okay, so it can't store its missile without the Key. It's a handheld missile launcher. It's neat.

As for Brimstone, for a long time- years and years, to be sure- I've wanted an airplane TF whose nose/cockpit section becomes a leg. Brimstone is close enough. (Though Energon Slugslinger wins on a technicality.)]

Crosswise is better than any Alternator because he's cheaper, and has action gimmicks.

Ta dah! no knife needed, apparently, just a screwdriver. And her boat shell can become a Goblin Glider. ([info]z4nd4r found this and said to make sure Wills saw it.)

"Axe-murderingly complex and unplayable"? AWESOME. I'm sold.

I look forward to the day Transformers achieve the complexity of Pinhead's puzzle box -- minus the fish hooks, nails in head, and tortured screaming of the damned.

Aslan looks fake in the Narnia movie. Also he's a total puss, he only tore out ONE throat. Is this what we're teaching kids these days? That Jesus is a punk that just stands there and TAKES it? That BEGS for it?

That cat was a total pussy. Jaws is much better.

"long time listener, first time caller"

I really want to like Thunderblast. Sure her 'transformation' is more akin to a Pretender, but I mean, it's not like you didn't know that before you bought it. At least she has decent articulation. But anyway, I want to like her because the only thing that's more of a minority than femmebots is boat-bots. Plus Decepticon femmebots [have the potential to be] better than the femmebots of G1, unfortunately, they ruined that angle by making her all cutesy and flirty.

As for Crosswise, I hated the RiD Car Bros, but I love the Alternators, and I think Crosswise looks cooler than the Car Bros, so I'd give him a chance.
